The pollen is actually seeds for the flowering plant and usually looks like yellow dust.
When bees enter flower stamens to collect nectar for honey (which they ingest), the pollen “sticks” to their legs as they enter and exit. This is part of the symbiotic relationship bees have with flowering plants: as the bees enter and exit the flower stamens to collect nectar for honey, the pollen rubs on and off their legs, helping the plants to reproduce.
People who collect bee pollen do so by installing “brushes” at the entrances and exits to bee hives, which rub or brush off the pollen and collect it. The pollen at this stage is fresh from the flower and thanks to its ride on the bee, has collected some specific enzymes the bee produces and excretes through its legs. These enzymes are part of the “sticky” formula that coat the tiny hairs on bee’s legs to facilitate the pollen collection.
What Is In Bee Pollen
Bee pollen contains, as stated above, many enzymes and vitamins. Most prominent amongst these are several of the vitamins B, vitamin C, several flavanoids, antioxidants, and selenium.
Several of the vitamin B types (like B12) are associated with energy boosting, skin health, eyesight, weight maintenance (and appetite control), and immunity enhancement. They are also associated with asthma relief, digestion, and cancer prevention.
Vitamin C, of course, is an immune system booster and is vital for healthy teeth.
Flavanoids and antioxidants are very strong immune system builders and also aid digestion and vitality.
Selenium is the basis for strong bones and tooth enamel and has recently been found to be actually more important for these than is calcium—though both are needed, of course. Selenium is a naturally-occurring mineral found in teas and other plant-derived mixtures and bee pollen is one of the few sources for it directly available.
Allergies and Information
Those with an allergy to bees may have to miss out on the great benefits of bee pollen, but some will find that their reaction is not triggered by it. “Bee” allergies are actually several in nature, not just one. Someone allergic to bee stings, for instance, may have no reaction to honey or pollen while others who are allergic to bee enzymes will have a reaction to all three. As always, consult with your doctor or medical professional and, if you do test bee pollen, do it in small amounts in a controlled setting with a medical professional’s oversight.
