Why Earth Loves Organic Farming?

Why Earth Loves Organic Farming? When you think of the word organic, what comes to mind?  Is it food grown and produced without the use of chemicals?  Maybe better health?  No genetic modification?  Well it means all of these and more.  It means the health of the entire planet and everything that lives on it.  That’s pretty big isn’t it?

Let’s face it.  The earth and all life upon it has existed and thrived for millions of years without the use of any chemicals.  However, in a short 50 to 60 years we are devastating the planet.  Of course, farming non-organically is only one way we are harming the planet, but it is a major factor and we can certainly make changes for the better simple by making different choices.  What advantages do organic farming methods have over conventional farming methods?  Let’s take a look…

Benefits of Organic Farming for Soil and Water

Probably the most obvious benefit is soil quality.  Conventional farming methods contaminate the soil and they contribute to lower soil quality.  This means that that by farming organically, the food has a higher nutritional content simply because the soil has a higher nutritional content.  This also makes plants stronger and better able to resist disease and insects.
Organic farming also means cleaner water.  Every time pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides are sprayed on the crops much of it filters down into the groundwater.  This is the water that feeds and connects with lakes, rivers, streams and from which many people receive their drinking water.

Organic Farming and Global Warming

Yes, organic farming has a positive effect on global warming.  One of the most popular conventional fertilizers is a nitrogen fertilizer that is derived from fossil fuels.  Organic farming uses 30% less fossil fuels.  In fact, organic farming methods actually work to capture carbon from the atmosphere, one of the leading greenhouse gases, and integrate it into the soil, whereas conventional farming methods increase the amount of carbon going into the atmosphere.  Global warming is currently the greatest threat to life as we know it and we must do everything within our power to reverse its effects.

Organic Farming and Ecosystems

Organic farmers understand the importance of ecosystems.  Remember that organically grown plants are stronger.  Sure, you can spray chemicals in order to keep the bugs away, but if you have a good ecosystem set up with the right kinds of insects and birds around, they will eat the nasty bugs.  There are certain flowers that can be planted in order to keep insects away.  Of course, this is difficult to do in large-scale commercial farming settings, which brings up the question of whether our large-scale farming practices are sustainable.
Where does this leave us?  Easy.  By choosing to purchase organic goods you are choosing a healthy earth.  What could be more important than that?  If the earth gets sick, we all get sick.  So by buying organic you are taking care of yourself in more than one way – by eating healthier food and by having healthier water to drink and air to breathe.

What are you waiting for?

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.
