If you have decided you want to switch to organic food and are not sure where to buy it or whether your budget can make room for the extra expense, there is a way to solve both these problems easily.  You can simply grow organic vegetables  in your own backyard.  Really, it isn’t very difficult and it is incredibly rewarding to be able to go out and pick the food you are going to eat for dinner and to know that you have grown it yourself.

Grow Organic Vegetables in Your Backyard

There are many different ways to garden depending on how much space you have.  If you have a large backyard, then you can spread out and space your plants out more so that they can be more drought resistant.  You can also grow more food and more variety.  If you have a small backyard, then square foot gardening might be your new best friend.  This involves growing one plant per square foot and rotating what you grow.

Grow at Your Apartment

If you live in an apartment, you can still grow some of your own food.  If you have a balcony, you have an advantage, but even if you don’t you can still grow lots of food inside, near bright sunny windows.  Things that grow well in pots are herbs of all kinds, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and all sorts of leafy greens, and cucumbers and zucchini.  You can also get adventurous and try a few other things once you feel more experienced.

Grow at Community Garden

Another option is to get a plot at a community garden.  These are popping up in plenty in cities all over the country and in many places throughout the world.  This is an ideal option if you live in an apartment or otherwise cannot grow your own garden at home.  Rents for garden plots are low and they will generally till it before you plant, saving you a lot of hard work.

Get Help to from Others to Create Your Organic Garden

Now, I will admit that when you are growing your own garden organically, there is more physical labor involved, especially when it comes to weeding.  However, as long as you keep up with it before the weeds get too big and take over the garden, you can happily keep a weed-free garden that produces wonderful food.
Okay, okay.  I know many of you are sitting there saying, “I can’t grow my own food!  There are no green thumbs on these hands.”  Well, you might be surprised.  Start small and as you gain experience you can go to bigger and better gardens.  Get your family involved.  It will give you all quality time together and you will all reap the rewards of your hard work.  The food you get out of it will cost less money, be organic, be fresher (which is healthier), not need to be transported (which harms the environment), and will not require any packaging that will need to be thrown away.  All around it is a good choice for your health and the health of the planet.
