Organic is Not Just About Food – Organic Cosmetics and Clothing

Posted on July 18, 2009

When we hear the words organic we generally think about food.  Of course, food is certainly one of the most important organic products, but it is only one.  You see organic means growing plants without the use of synthetic chemicals or without changing them in any way.  Since plants, their fibers, and their oils can be used for many things, it is important that we consider organic on the larger scale.

Organic Food

Eat Delicious Organic FoodOK, I’ll take a moment to discuss food.  Organic food means many things.  First of all, it has not been produced with the use of any synthetic chemicals.  No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or dangerous fertilizers have been used on plants.  Livestock has been raised on organic food and without the use of antibiotics or other conventional medications.  When it comes to food, organic also guarantees that the food has not been genetically modified in any way.  This means that when it’s organic you will know exactly what is going into your body.  Your tomato is simply a natural tomato.

Organic Clothing

100% Organic Clothing Have you ever thought about what your clothes are made of?  Of course, there are plenty of synthetic materials that go into the production of fabrics, but what about the natural fibers?  What about the cotton and the wool?  Well, it might surprise you to know that nearly 25% of the world’s pesticide use goes to growing cotton.  Amazing isn’t it?  That means that simply by choosing to purchase organic clothing you can help reduce the amount of pesticides being used on the earth.

Of course, organic clothing and other things such as bedding and towels are more expensive.  If you cannot afford to fit the greater expense into your budget, the next best thing is to purchase used clothing.  This means that you are reusing rather than contributing to the production of new clothes.  And it is really fun to go out and find great clothes on the used clothes racks!

Organic Cosmetics

Use Organic cosmetic ProductsWhen I say organic cosmetics I am including all toiletries, such as shampoo and conditioner, as well as moisturizers, sunscreens, makeup, and anything else you might put on your skin.  These products often contain natural ingredients that have been taken from plants that have been grown conventionally.  Unfortunately, human skin is very porous and when you put products on your skin that are not organic you are risking the toxic chemicals from the plants (as well as the other ones they add to the products) being absorbed into your skin.  Add that to what you get from non-organic food and what you ingest through the water you drink and the air you breathe and your body can become a toxic waste dump.

The simple solution to this is to buy organic and to buy used clothing whenever possible.  This way you are making sure your body is healthier and the earth is healthier.  The most important thing to remember is that every dollar you spend is a vote.  So every time you buy food, clothing, or cosmetics you need to stop and think, “Do I want to vote for organic or non-organic?  Do I want to vote for a healthy earth or a sick one?”  If you do this, you might find the answer is quite simple.

Vote organic!

Happiness depends upon ourselves.
