Organic Benefits – The “WHY” of Organic

Posted on July 14, 2009

Oh, where to begin?  After all, there are so many reasons why organic is better and so many living things for which it is better.  It is better for you, it is better for the farmers and the people in farming communities, and it is better for the earth.  How?  Let’s take a closer look.

Organic is Better for You

Why Organic Food is Better for YouWhy is organic better for you?  The very first thing to know, and probably the thing you have already heard about organic, is that it is healthier.  Organic food has been produced without the use of chemicals of any kind.  When it comes to meat, the animals have not been exposed to antibiotics, conventional medicines, or non-organic food.  This means that these toxic substances are not going into your body and that is much better for you.  Consider that when growing food 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides, and 30% of all insecticides cause cancer.  Do you really want that in your body?
Now here is one thing that you will notice as soon as you first try organic food – it tastes better!  This is because the soil in which the food grows (either the food we eat or the food fed to the animals we eat) is much healthier, which in turn produces food that tastes better and is of better quality and higher in nutrients than their non-organic equivalents.

Organic is Better for the Farmer and Others

It might seem obvious how organic food is better for you, but it can be less obvious when it comes to the farmer and those people who live in the farming communities.  However, organic is much better for the farmers.  After all, when the crops are being sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides who is doing the spraying?  The famers are doing it, which means that they are exposed to those chemicals on a regular basis.  They are breathing in and otherwise ingesting these poisons.

Organic farming also helps communities.  Not only are the farmers healthier when farming organically, but so are all the people who live in the farming communities.  They do not have to deal with the contamination of their air and their drinking water if the farming is organic.  Organic farming also sustains the economy of a community by providing employment to local people and ensuring a good income for the farmer.

Organic is Better for the Earth

Green EarthOrganic farming promotes diversity, soil health, and cleaner water.  Isn’t that important?  We all have to remember that everything is interconnected and that the health of the earth directly affects the health of all of the animals on the planet, including us.  Now, when I say diversity I mean encouraging a wide variety of life to exist.  This happens when farmers collect and save sometimes rare seeds and grow a wider range of plants.  Organic farming also encourages diversity in the animals, birds, and insects in an area and it is not unusual to find a small ecosystem on an organic farm.

Of course, this is just a brief look at why organic farming is better, but hopefully it has encouraged you to consider buying organic.  After all, there is absolutely nothing more important on which to spend your money than what goes into your body, so get out there and support organic!
