Making Your Own Organic Skin Care Products
Skin care products like lotions, topical solutions, makeup, and so forth are mostly unregulated as these are not considered medicine or food. Only if the label claims the product to be “organic” does it require Food and Drug Administration certification of that fact.
Even then, the FDA is merely certifying the ingredients (that are natural) were grown in an organic matter. The USDA Organic label on a product does certify that at least 95% of the product’s ingredients are organic.
There are some nasty things in some skin care products, though. Parabens, which we’ve discussed more than once already, glycols, talc, and other ingredients are commonly found in many skin care products. They have been linked with a lot of problems and studies are ongoing to make those links conclusive.
Making your own, natural and organic skin care products isn’t hard, though. Most of them use similar ingredients too, so you can make several of them without buying a lot of hard-to-find items. Most everything you’ll need can be found in your health food store or a reputable supplement pharmacy.
Check each ingredient to make sure you aren’t allergic and test the finished products carefully, in small quantities, to ensure you don’t have a reaction. Most people will have no issues, however.
Body Powder
This is probably the easiest and most useful skin care item on this list. It’s easy to make, has a lot of uses, and is made up of pretty safe ingredients. You can use it as a baby powder (TEST FIRST), a personal body powder, etc.
To make body powder, you’ll need a measure of baking soda, betonite clay (powdered), or cornstarch. Or any combination of those. Betonite is relatively cheap and baking soda has many extras for deodorizing that may be of benefit.
Make sure the powder is as fine as possible. Use a mortar and pestle if you need to make it finer. Store in a clean bowl, jar, or container with a tight-fitting lid to keep moisture out. A canning jar with a perforated lid and another to sandwich on top works great and gives you a shaker to dispense it easily.
Lip Balm
The main ingredient for this lip balm is going to be beeswax. Adding a nourishing oil like shea butter, coconut oil, or cocoa butter mixed with a like amount of liquid what germ oil, olive oil, or almond oil ads a lot to the healing properties too. Mix and match to your preference of oils to make a total of 4 ounces (2oz of each type). The mix in 2 ounces of beeswax and churn into a thick, almost hard paste.
All of the ingredients other than beeswax are optional. You can skip the nourishing oils, for instance, or the liquid oils. Raise and lower amounts to match your preferences here. Straight beeswax is a great lip balm that’s easily used. The other items are a bonus. You can also ad drops of essential oils for scent (mint and orange are favorites) and even powdered vitamin E.
There are also great ways to make shaving creams and gels, shampoos, etc. The above lip balm recipe can be modified by lowering the amount of beeswax or adding aloe gel to make a good skin balm for dry skin on elbows, heels, etc.
There are a lot of ways to go natural and to do it yourself. If DIY isn’t for you, there are a lot of skincare products at the store that are getting more and more transparent about their true green, organic natures and not just using the labels to get more sales.
