Constipated MonkeyEvery one of us gets constipated sometimes.  “A little backed up,” we might say, or “not quite regular.”

Our digestive system is, to put it mildly, a touchy thing that strikes a balance between keeping us safe from some of the more questionable things we might ingest and the fact that it must process enough food to give us the energy and nutrients we need as quickly as it can.

Keeping this balance sometimes means that things don’t, well, move along like they should.  So sometimes there’s plumbing issues and often this means it gets a little backed up in there.

When this happens, most of us will have a couple of thoughts go through our heads:

“Why does this have to happen?  I eat healthy!  There’s got to be an operation or something to fix this.  Sheesh!”

or

“Where’s the pink stuff?  I gotta get rid of this!”

Either way, our first thought is to clear the problem up and pronto.

Why Constipation Happens

Before we look at how to fix the problem, let’s look at what causes it to start with.  As mentioned earlier, it could be just the natural process has been thrown out of whack somewhere.  Maybe it’s something you ate, maybe it’s a change in lifestyle, or maybe it’s part of a larger sickness.

Most likely, it’s either something you’ve eaten that was very different from the norm or it is part of a larger sickness or problem.  Usually that means stress.  In fact, doctors think that stress is the number one cause of most of our chronic and non-threatening ills.

If you get sick more often, gain or lose weight often, or have problems like headaches or constipation, it’s likely stress-related.  Stress is a long-term thing that affects us in a lot of ways and constipation is one of the more common side effects of it.

Avoiding and Remedying Constipation Naturally

Since most constipation is caused by either eating something unusual or stress, avoiding those things is the obvious way to keep from getting constipated very often.

Stress-reducing things like exercise, changes in work habits or lifestyle, and so forth are a good start.  A well-balanced diet and making sure you get enough fresh vegetables and fiber are excellent diet tips.  If you’re eating an unusual type of food, for instance, try to eat plenty of fibers with it (or before).

Natural remedies for constipation include castor, flax, and linseed oils.

Castor oil can be mixed with tea or non-citric juices, but shouldn’t be used for small children or pregnant women.  It’s effective and relatively fast-acting, though.

Flax and linseed oils are a little slower, but are much less dramatic.  These can be mixed with water or a light tea.  Avoid sugar with them, but they are safe for children.

Olive oil can also work, but is not as effective as the other three remedies listed here.  It can also be mixed and is safe for children.

Eating a laxative fruit like bananas or prunes is obviously a bonus when using these other remedies.  Unless you over-indulge, these fruits aren’t likely to help on their own, but they will boost the effectiveness of some of the other remedies here.

Hopefully, this information is helpful and you’ll remember it the next time you aren’t feeling regular.
